The first major Professional team in Phoenix were the Suns who began in Phoenix in 1968 and were named the Suns after a Newspaper contest drew more than 28,000 entries to "name the team" the winner received $1000 and season tickets for that first year. The Suns were not a good team that first year going 16 and 66.
Jim Dougherty and his wife Janice founded Pets Mart here in Phoenix in 1986 under a different name, it was changed to Pets Mart in 1989. Pets Mart lost money until 1992 when additional products besides pet food were added. In 2014 Pets Mart sold for 8.7 Billion dollars. Today Pets Mart has more than 1600 locations.
After the 1987 NFL season St. Louis Cardinal Football owner Bill Bidwell on a "handshake" deal with local and state officials became the Phoenix Cardinals. On St. Patrick's day in 1994, Cardinal Management changed the team name to the Arizona Cardinals. in 2009, Cards went to the Super Bowl lostng 27-23 to Pittsburgh.
